The Prix Galien USA will be awarded for
The Best Pharmaceutical Agent
with broad implications for future biomedical research
The Best Biotechnology Product
with broad implications for future biomedical research
AND
a Pro Bono Humanum Award
for meeting unmet human needs through pharmaceutical science
All pharmaceutical and biological drugs or devices that have been US FDA approved for first or new indications in the past 5 years (2003 - 2007) are eligible to enter. As few as one or as many as three prizes may be awarded in each of these two categories, and from time to time the committee may decide on awards hors prix.
The pharmaceutical and biotechnology products to be considered in the Prix Galien USA shall have been based on innovative science, developed by synthetic chemistry or molecular biology, manufactured to precise specifications, tested in controlled clinical trials and marketed by ethical pharmaceutical companies.
The prizes are awarded for pharmaceutical science that improves the human condition. The selection will be based on two criteria:
One: What was innovative in the course of its scientific development, application or clinical utility?
Two: Was its discovery heuristic? Did we learn anything for the future of biomedical science from its introduction to the clinic?
Criteria that will not be considered will be the size of the market, the size of the company, the cost of development or the contingencies of distribution.
In addition, at the discretion of the committee, the Prix Galien USA will award a special Pro Bono Humanum award to an individual, a company, an academic institution, or a nongovernmental agency that has helped to improve the human condition through the application of pharmaceutical science to problems of developing or underserved populations worldwide.
